Two biomass-powered thermal plants from CPFL Renováveis just received three important certifications yearly at the construction stage. Thermal Plant Coopcana, in São Carlos do Ivaí, PR, and Thermal Plant Alvorada, in Araporã, MG, were awarded the seals ISO 9001:2008 for quality management, ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management, and OHSAS 18001:2007 for occupational health and safety. These international standards secure the commitment to quality, safety, and environment.

Inspected by Fundação Vanzolini, the two plants are among the first in the country to be certified at the construction phase. “CPFL Renováveis has always worked on the excellence of its procedures; this is why it’s so important to reach this result right from the construction stage. This way, the market can see for sure that we’re ready to serve it”, explains Miguel Saad, CEO at CPFL Renováveis.
To win this certification, the internal auditing team of CPFL Renováveis implemented the Integrated Management System (IMS). The project consists of managing and controlling processes to verify their efficiency. For six months, the company collected data and created procedures to meet all requirements. The implementation of the IMS involved employees from all departments and over 20 companies from the two plants. From now on, CPFL Renováveis will adopt the same procedures for other six thermal plants.
ISO 14001 standard requires companies to prevent environmental damage and to engage in continuous improvement as a part of the natural business management cycle. The ISO 9001:2000 certification ensures the company operates with integrated processes for quality management, with trained people focused on the company’s goals and customer satisfaction. On the other hand, OHSAS 18001:2007 has a preventive approach to reduce and control workplace risks.
